As soon as you enter Reaching Out in Hoi An, get ready to be charmed by the beauty, the simplicity of this special place. This place was really a discovery we couldn’t keep to ourself. If you’ve been to Hoi An old town, you probably already know about it, if you haven’t, well, that might give you another reason to come to this amazing town.
So let us give you an introduction of “Reaching Out” who owns 2 places in town: a shop full of handcraft and a tea house.
Reaching Out Tea House
Located in the Old Town of Hoi An this tea house is pretty special. It is a part of a local social enterprise and focuses on giving you an authentic feeling of the old town. Pretty much like most of the area the design is a mix of colonial era and old fashion Vietnamese architecture . The atmosphere in there is peaceful and pretty much everything about it will catch your eyes. From the main place to every little details, everything has been thought of carefully.
But what make this place special is the staff. The servers at Reaching Out Teahouse are all speech and hearing impaired. The association behind Reaching Out wanted to give them a chance to find work when they couldn’t get hired due to their handicap, that’s actually the big philosophy behind this: giving a job and fair wages to people with handicaps. Get ready to pass little sheets of paper with your order to your waiter or waitress, those are carefully positioned on the table in front of you to give you a good idea of what is required from you.
Tea and coffees are all fairtrade and their quality is absolutely amazing (The Ice coffee comes with a beautiful set that is handmade and comes from their shop, a few doors down the tea shop. The hot arabica is brought in a goldenVietnamese set and once passed in the glass cup, your waitress will bring some coffee ice to keep the coffee as pure as possible, perfect for coffee lovers that might despise water downed iced coffee.)
All the tableware you will encounter is made in an “Imperial Hue Style” by the artisan they hire in the shop. They make for perfect gifts to bring back home (or perfect souvenirs to keep for yourself).
Choice is limited but that’s an advantage in a tea house where you can never choose between the 20 different teas on offer. Things are kept simple: a couple of teas, coffees and 2 fresh juices, no more, make your selection.
But to satisfy your sweet tooth the shop also offers a selection of handmade delicacies from traditional Western types to more Asian choices. Chocolate cookies, coconut cookies and many others are usually available but will change depending to the time of year to keep things seasonal. Strangest selections for the Westerner like us contains coconut green tea (pictured below) and more gingery sweets. An exotic taste that won’t be lost on most of us.
If you are coming to Reaching Out Teahouse you are most likely coming for the experience, the feeling to be part of a great social experiment but you’ll come out considering that you actually came to a quality establishment with quality products and a great service. This place never disappoints and is probably one of the best spots to visit in Hoi An. So if you come around town you will have to give Reaching Out Teahouse a try. It is the perfect place to loose yourself for a bit and show your support to a great initiative!
